Oil and gas produced offshore is transported by tanker or pipeline to refineries, where it is treated and stored in insulated tanks. For liquefied natural gas (LNG), temperatures inside the tanks are kept very low to reduce the required volume. When natural gas is needed, the LNG is warmed to a point where it converts back to its gaseous state.
